Big Daddy, oil paint, textile, and twine on paper, 76” X 84” was created at a 2025 full summer residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. It can be mounted with or without spaces between the individual sections.
This is the first image in a planned series about the longing for secours. Big Daddy depicts the urge to wait for irresponsible absent fathers to return and carry us away on trusty steeds, to vote for unreliable rulers even as they look after their own interests, to pray in our times of desperation to an often-impassive God. We find ourselves ignoring the evidence to the contrary and relying on the idea of an all-powerful force who will come relieve us of suffering. Perhaps it’s a childlike desire for assistance as we confront the uncontrollable vicissitudes of life, or simply a denial of the painful reality of feeling alone, but it is remarkable to witness the strength of the instinct to wish for rescue.
